Layers of the skin Flashcards
What are the three layers
Epidermis
Dermis
Subcutaneous layer
Description of the epidermis
Stratified squamous epithelium
No blood vessels
Lowest layer – stratum Basale – close to dermal blood vessels
What does division of the epidermis produce?
cells which grow and move up and away from the dermis – keratinisation occurs (later)
Description of the dermis
Uneven boundary with epidermis – dermal papillae project upwards and epidermal layer extends into these ridges
What does dermis do for the epidermis
Hold epidermis to underlying tissue
What continues into subcutaneous layer
Areolar (connective tissue) and dense connective tissue including collagen fibres and elastic fibres
What do dermal blood vessels provide and what is it involved in?
Nutrition to all skin
Involved in temperature regulation
Describe nerve cell process in all dermal tissue
– motor and sensory impulses – touch, pain, blood vessel diameter
What are the accessory structures in dermis
hair follicles, sebaceous glands, sweat glands
What does the subcutaneous layer contain
Areolar (connective tissue) and adipose tissue
What does the subcutaneous layer bind the skin to?
Binds the skin to the organs / muscles beneath
What are Collagen and elastic fibres of subcutaneous layer are continuous with
dermal layer
What does adipose tissue in subcutaneous layer provide
insulation
What in in the subcutaneous layer?
Main blood vessels supplying skin and adipose tissue
