Layers Of The Epidermis Flashcards
Name the 5 layers from bottom to the top.
Stratum basal, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, stratum lucidum, stratum corneum
Stratum basale
The bottom layer that is one cell thick and it is composed of cells constantly undergoing mitosis. Contains melanocytes.
Stratum spinosum
Second layer from the bottom that is several cells thick and also undergoes mitosis. Also has melanocytes.
Stratum granulosum
Third layer from the bottom where cells start to die. Lots of Keratin.
Stratum lucidum
Second layer from the top. Thick skin of palms and soles where cells are dead.
Stratum corneum
Top layer made of 25-30 layers of dead keratinized cells.
In thin skin, what layer is emitted?
The stratum lucidum.
What are the two types of pigment?
Eumelanin (dark) and pheomelanin (red tint)
Cancer results from the abnormal uncontrolled mitosis of a group of cells. In what layers of the epidermis is it possible to get cancer? Why is it impossible to get cancer in the other layers of the epidermis?
Only the cells in the stratum by sounds to Adam spinosum can undergo mitosis. Melanoma results from uncontrolled mitosis of melanocytes which is in both the layers. Basal cell carcinoma is the uncontrolled mitosis of cells in stratum basal. Lastly squamous cell carcinoma comes from uncontrolled mitosis of cells in the stratum spinosum.
