Routing
Also called Layer 3 Switching,
Packet Switching
Data is divided into packets and then forwarded based on its IP address (most networks use packet switching)
Circuit Switching
Dedicated communication link is established between two devices (think of a phone call getting switched on & all of the data is going back and forth as we talk) Switchboard operator
Message Switching
Data is divided into messages which may be stored and then forwarded (It has a store and forward capability)
Route Discovery & Selection
Manually configured as a static route or dynamically through a routing protocol
Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP)
Sends error messages and operational information to an IP destination. Most commonly used one is known as PING. PING is usually used on Admin level to troubleshoot out network.
Layer 3 Devices
Routers & Multilayer switches (regular switch & router combined)
Layer 3 protocols example
