Layer 1 Flashcards
Physical Layer
Where transmission of bits across the network occurs & includes physical & electrical network characteristics.
Transition Modulation
If it changes during the clock cycle, then a 1 is represented (otherwise, a 0 is represented) no charge/light = 0, charge/light = 1
Asynchronous
Uses start and stop bits to indicate when transmissions occur from the sender to the receiver (out of sync)
Synchronous
Uses a reference clock to coordinate the transmissions by both sender and receiver (in sync)
Broadband
Divides bandwidth into separate channels, (single cable coming into house but only pick one channel TV)
Baseband
Uses all available frequencies on a medium (cable) to transmit data (can only make one call at a time, wired home ethernet network)
Multiplexing
Allows multiple people to use a baseband connection at the same time
Examples of Physical Layer
Wires themselves, hubs, access points, media converters
