What is layout
Layout is a term for locating and marking lines of circles arcs and points for drilling holes
What are layout lines
They are reference points on the material to show the machinist where to machine
What is layout dye
It is a coating to make the layout lines more visible
What is a scriber
A scriber is used to make fine lines on the metal
What’s a divider
Commonly used to layout and measure distances
Circles and arcs are made with the divider
What’s a trammel
The trammel is used to draw circles and arcs that are too large for the divider
What’s a surface gage
A surface gage is mostly used for layout work
It has a base a spindle and a scriber
An adjusting screw for fine adjustments
Squares
Two types of squares:
Hardened steel square is a fixed 90degree square. It is a true square or a right angle
A double square can be used for a few applications it has. A adjustable and interchangeable blade
What’s a combination set
A hardened blade that can be used in a square head, a Center head or a bevel protractor
In the combination set what’s the square head used for
It has a standard 90 and 45 degree angle. This tool can be used as a standard square or a mitre square
What’s the Center head used for in a combination set
The Center head has two extending edges forming a 90 degree angle. Properly placed the Center head can be used for locating the Center in round stock
What’s the protractor head on the combination set
The head can rotate 180 degrees. The head can be locked to the blade with a locking nut making it possible to accurately measure or layout angles
