What are lay health beliefs?
A
- beliefs of the lay public
- use these beliefs for their material, social and bodily circumstances.
- based on knowledge and infor passed on from:
= word of mouth
= general knowledge
= professionals

What is disease candidacy?
A
- certain people are likely to get the disease
- e.g. smokers likely to get lung cancer
so if i dont smoke i wont get lung cancer

Explain health as a disease candidacy model (Davidson, Davey Smith & Frankel 1994)?
A
- lay health beliefs
- construct from appearance of person and circumstance around event
- support or challenge biomedical aetiology
- teleological explanation of illness i.e. “there was a meaning or purpose underlying his/her illness”

What is functional capacity?
A
- if you are coping with the disease, you are fine

What is health as a disease model (Blaxter 1982)?
A
- health= absence of disease
- working class conception
- able to fulfil social and work role is main criteria of healthiness
- never having a days illness= positive moral individual characteristic
- see health as coping
- should have ‘cheerful stoicism’ even when ill

What is the health seeking model?
A
- Symptoms - physical, mental, social
- Accommodate to the symptoms
- Interferes with social/work//Personal crisis
- People insist you to get help
- Set personal time limit ‘‘if it doesn’t go away after a bit then I’ll seek help”
- Decide to seek help:
- Lay referral System
- Visit GP
- Self medication

- telephone consultation (nurse VIA NHS direct)

What does the Department of Health encourage?
A
- some patients thought they were deserving patients bc calling NHS direct meant there were saving doctor’s times and not using up resources lol
- DoH recognise the knowledge patients have about their illness
- encourage them to take ‘active role in their own care’
- user led self management
