Why do people construct lay beliefs?
To understand and make sense of areas in their lives about which they have no specialised knowledge

Health behaviour
Illness behaviour
Adherence with treatment
Describe the negative definition of health. What people is this commonly found?
Health is the absence of illness. Often held belief in lower socioeconomic groups
What is the functional definition of health?
The ability to do certain things
What is the positive definition of health? Which people normally hold this belief?
Health is a state of well being and fitness. More commonly held belief in higher socio economic groups.
What is the lay referral system?
The chain of advice-seeking contacts which the sick make with other lay people prior to (or instead of) seeking help from a health care professional.
