Laws of Exponents Flashcards
To multiply powers of the same base,
add the exponants.
To divide powers with the same base,
subtract the exponents.
To raise a power to a power,
multiply the exponents.
To use an exponent on a fraction,
add the exponents to each (number/letter) and divide.
To use a power on a product
distribute the exponent to the numbers.
To use a power on a quotient
put the exponent next to the numerator and the denominator.
When there is a negative exponent what should you do?
Turn the exponent positive and divide the power by 1. (Ex: 1/a ᵐ)
Name the law: a⁰ = 1
The Zero Exponent Law
Name the law: a¹ = a
The Identity Exponent Law
Name the law: aᵐ × aⁿ = a ᵐ+ⁿ
The Product Law
Name the law: aᵐ/aⁿ = aᵐ⁻ⁿ
The Quotient Law
Name the law: a⁻ᵐ = 1/a ᵐ
The Negative Exponents Law
Name the law: (aᵐ)ⁿ = aᵐⁿ
Power of a Power Law
Name the law: (ab)ᵐ = aᵐbᵐ
Power of a Product Law
Name the law: a/bᵐ = aᵐ/bᵐ
