Explain Title VII (Civil Rights Act of 1967)
- Cannot discriminate against five protected groups: race, religion, gender, national origin and color.
- This is for hiring, firing, training and promotions of workers.
Explain Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA)
Prohibits arbitrary age discrimination against employees or applicants age 40 and older.
Amendments abolished mandatory retirement of employees of any age.
Amendments also require employers to continue making full contributions to employees’ retirement plan accounts until they retire.
Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978
The act amended the Title VII Civil Rights act.
Temporary disabilities due to childbirth and pregnancy must be treated the same as any other temporary disability.
Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA)
Requires employers with at least 50 employees within a 75-mile radius to provide up to 12 workweeks of unpaid leave for certain events during a 12-month period.
Rehabilitation Act of 1973
Employers that have federal contracts work more than $25,000 or that receive government financial assistance cannot discriminate against handicapped individuals and must take affirmative action to provide employment opportunities for them.
American Disability Act (ADA)
Prohibits discrimination in employment due to a person’s disability but also requires goods and services to be made accessible.
We must make a reasonable accommodation for anyone who has a permanent and life limiting disability either mental or physical.
Americans with disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA)
Came into being and reversed the trend so that persons with major life limitations, even if given a meaningful life due to modern medicine, will still receive protection from discrimination due to their disability. Now individuals with impairments such as amputation, intellectual disabilities, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, HIV, diabetes, muscular dystrophy and cancer must receive reasonable accommodations for their disabilities.
