Adversarial System
Present day law system
Both sides are represented by lawyers, taking place in a court to decide an innocence.
Assizes
Travelling courts used under the command of King Henry II. These courts would go around to villages and settle disputes.
Case Law/Common Law
also known as “common to all”, Common Law was developed by circuit judges to came together to make similar outcomes for similar cases.
Circuit Judges
Used in the time of Common Law, circuit judges were brought around villages in order to resolve disputes.
Code of Hammurabi
One of the first recorded set of laws, written by King Hammurabi of Babylon. Based in Sura, Iran.
Code of Li K’vei
Made around 350 BCE, Code of K’vei included laws about…

Divine Right
Monarchs had a power given to them by God to determine what was right and wrong, and to ultimately decide innocence and guilt.
Great Laws Of Manu
Before being written down, laws were passed down orally, through stories and myths. The Great Laws of Manu were Indian Laws brought together between 1280 and 880 BCE.
Habeas Corpus
A component of the Magna Carta; Latin for “you must have the body”. This was designed in favour for citizens, as this prevented unlawful arrest-they would have a court date before being detained.
Justinian’s Code
Roman Law organized and made sense of, into a code by Justinian I.
Magna Carta
An english charter, signed in 1215. This charter contained both political and civil rights. This marked the end of unlimited power, when signed by King John.
Mosaic Law / 10 Commandments
Biblical Laws (Hebrew as well), found in the Book of Exodus along with the Ten Commandments; laws to lead all Hebrew people, given to Moses by God.
Napoleonic Code
The French Civil Law, used officially in 1804 on.
Quebec Civil Code
Our legal system today; the Quebec Civil Code is meant to include all people affected by law: the offenders, victims, and law enforcers. This code includes aboriginal law.
