What are the eligibility requirements for a C-Cat?
- CPL on the category of aircraft
- 200hrs flight time
- Passed course in practice and theory of flight instruction
- Passed oral exams (met, PoF, Nav/x-country techniques, flight instruction theory.)
- 25hrs dual flight instructor training
- Demonstrate instruction ability in all normal and emergency procedures (oral exam and flight test)
What are the privileges of a C-Cat?
- Give flight instruction
- Authorise solo (other than first solo) by a student by day or night
- Certify student logbook
- Conduct Type ratings
- Conduct PPL x-country demonstration of competence
What are the additional things/types of flying that an instructor must demonstrate if they wish to teach?
- Night
- Spinning
- Aerobatic
- Multi-engine
What are the limitations of a C-Cat?
- Must hold a type rating
- Direct supervision for first 100hrs and 6 months
- Indirect supervision thereafter
- Not give instruction in IMC or on IFR flight plan unless instrument rated
- Must have multi, spinning, aerobatic, or night instruction certified in logbook
What are the currency requirements for a C-Cat?
- Annual Competency Demonstration (supersedes BFR)
- Recent Flight experience
- Current Class 1 medical
What are the minimum flight experience requirements made up of?
- 150hrs PIC
- 15hrs Instrument Time
- 1hr dual instruction in spin recovery
- 40hrs x-country as PIC
What requirements must the C-Cat’s direct supervisor meet?
- On the same aerodrome at the same time
- Directly responsible for the instruction actions of the instructor under supervision.
- Must be an A-Cat or B-Cat
What are the requirements of a supervisor of an instructor out of direct supervision?
- Be an A-Cat or B-Cat
- Monitor, help, and guide C-Cat instructor
- Accept supervisory responsibility
- Must be in the same area but not necessarily on the same aerodrome
What is the catch with instructor annual competency checks superseding the BFR?
-If annual comp check lapses and it has been more than 2 years since a BFR the pilot has student privileges only
Who can conduct your annual competency check for your C-Cat?
Flight Examiner with C-Cat initial issue/continued competency privileges.
What is required to be able to conduct mountain flying lessons
- Be out of direct supervision
- Approval (as appropriate) from supervising instructor to conduct terrain awareness, basic/advanced mountain flying.
What things can a C-Cat sign off on?
- Training log (must be counter signed)
- Type ratings
- Instrument flying syllabus/ Instrument time
- PPL Nav syllabus (out of supervision)
- Terrain awareness (if certified)
