What are laws
A set of rules created by law makers acting on behalf of a state and which are imposed on all citizens of state
Who do laws apply to
Generally the whole country except for some forms of delegated legislation which only applies to a small area
How are laws enforced in terms of criminal law
By a system of courts which can impose sanctions for non-compliance
What do laws regulate in a civil sense
The conduct of citizens towards each other and can set rules requiring the payment of compensation, or some other order, for the benefit of the innocent party
What is judicial precedent
Allows judges to make decisions in court which have the effect of law
What is the principle of parliamentary sovereignty
Means that the will of parliament, the legislature, has greater authority over judicial precedent
Why does parliamentary sovereignty exist
It is democratically elected and carries out the will of the people
How is a law created
It is written down and published
When will laws apply regardless of
If the citizen knows of its existence/ understands them or not

A form of social control and regulation of behaviour
