A

A diverse society where we tolerate each other’s beliefs. The UK is multicultural with variety of religious beliefs.

How has LGBTQ+ rights developed over time?

A

-Pre 1957 : Homosexuality was a crime in UK
-The Wolfenden Report of 1957 - homosexuality was decriminalised in the Sexual Offences Act 1967
-2001: Age of consent in homosexual relationships were lowered from 21 to 16
-The policing and Crime Act 2017 - pardoned thousands of homosexual men who were convicted under old law.

How has Northern Ireland incorporated religion into their legal system?

A

-Ireland is heavily Catholic and Supreme Court initially ruled that organisations were not allowed to give information about abortion options in the UK to Women.

  • In the case of Open Door Counselling and Dublin Woman Well Centre v Ireland the European Court of Human Rights ruled that this violated article 10 violating freedom to expression.

-October 2019: Northern Ireland decriminalised abortion but only legal up to 12 weeks, after it can be aborted for medical reasons only.
