Law Flashcards
Metonymy
word so closely associated to something that is is used as replacement (law, OT)
Negative connotation associated with OT
Oppressive laws, justification by works before God
Think NT is “freedom from law, O happy condition”
Is law a contrast to grace and truth of Jesus (John 1:17, Gal 3:14)
No
Meaning of law
Cribb thinks “law” isn’t best translation of Hebrew root.
Suggests better translation is “to instruct”
Mischaracterization of 10 commandments
OT actually calls them “10 words” (Decalogue) not commandments
They are more about governing covenant relationship
Better phrase: “Ten principles of covenantal relationship”
Proper perceptions of Torah
Not a precondition of salvation, but a grateful response to it! (Exos 19;4-6, Rom 4:13)
Expression of covenant relationship (allegiance not to a code of conduct, but a covenant lord)
Obedience to the Torah was the precondition to Israel’s fulfillment of the mission (holy nation, kingdom of priests)
