Why did God create marriage?
To illustrate to the world His covenant relationship with His ppl
Love
In marriage:
=>is expressed, not felt!! choice, faithfulness, person (embodied by Jesus)
In covenant:
=> expressed through obedience and worship
(in OT nobody ever says “I love God”: couldn’t bring themselves to? never perfectly obeyed covenant vows)
Most scholars see 6 major covenants
-creation
-noah
-Abraham
-Moses
-David
-New Covenant
Covenant w/ Creation
divine relationship established with the entire creation, as represented by Adam
=>Adam had kingly and mediatorial role (fill and subdue): he was to expand the sanctuary rest of God to all the earth
=>then rest of the covenants are subsets to restore this original purpose
Noahic covenant
its goal: reestablish the covenant with creation
Uses Noah as “new Adam”: in Gen 9 tells him to be fruitful and multiply, fill the Earth an subdue it
Abrahamic covenant
Promise of a land, blessing, and seed, and all nations would be blessed in him. all he had to do was “go and be”
Sign of covenant was circumcision, reminding Abraham of promise of many offspring
righteousness
to be in right covenant relationship with God
Israelite Covenant
terms of this covenant: stipulations and laws found in torah. Conditional covenant (in the sense of blessing/cursing). Now formalized as covenant ppl
