Appearence notice
Compelling the accused to appear in court, used for lesser offences.
Arrest
legally depriving someone of liberty by seizing/touching them indicating they are in custody
Arrest Warrent
A written court order directing the arrest of a certain person
Bail
temporary release of the accused who posts money or other security
Bench warrent
An arrest warrant issued directly by the judge when the accused fails to show up in court
Detention
Legally taking away someones liberty to ask questions, sometimes without constraints
Information
A statement given under oath, informing the court of the details of the offence
Line-up
A grouping of people shown to a victim or a witness for the purpose of identifying the perpetrator
Peace officer
A person responsible for preserving the public peace, such as an officer, mayor
Promise to appear
A signed agreement that an accused person will appear in court at the time of the trial
Reasonable grounds
Information that would lead a reasonable person to conclude that the suspect had committed a criminal offence
Recognizance
A guarantee that the accused will appear in court when required, under penalty of $500
Reverse onus
Burden of proof shifts to the defense
Search warrent
A court document that gives police the right to search a specific location
Show-cause hearing
A judicial hearing in which the crown or the accused has to convince the judge either to detain or release the accused before trial
