What is dementia?
chronic loss of memory and other cognitive function
What is delerium?
acute confusion, agitation, altered mental status
What can be used to treat delerium/dementia?
environment-Consistency, lights, music therapy
touch- warm blankets/weights
approach- positive regard

Meds- eliminate polypharmacy, antipsychotics
What is SOB?
subjective feeling of being unable to catch breath
What helps SOB?
env- cool temps, fan, high ceilings
How do you support hypoxia?
oxygen
ventilation
How do you manage mucous?
hydration
saline nebs
guaifenesin
What meds can be used for SOB?
opiates–decrease resp rate–> decreased air hunger
treat anxiety
inhalers
What causes swelling?
organ failure malnutrition physical obstruction dependent edema ascites anasarca lymphedema
What are the two types of anxiety?
primary–related to depression, GAD, phobias
secondary- end of life fears, adrenal tumors, acute air hunger, chronic dyspnea
How can you improve anxiety?
evn- outside, triggers, animals, music

What meds can be used for anxiety?
SSRIS
benzos
tx underlying pain and sob
What should you be wary of if you give someone benzos?
the paradoxical reaction–> people get mean
What are syndromes that can cause N/V?
constipation bowel obstruction gastroparesis increased ICP migraine vertigo/motion sickness
