LATHE Flashcards
Who is known as the father of all machine tools?
The lathe machine is known as the father of all machine tools.
What is the main function of a lathe machine?
To remove metal in the form of chips from a workpiece by rotating it against a cutting tool.
What type of cutting tool is generally used in lathe machines?
A single-point cutting tool.
What should be the property of the cutting tool material?
It must be harder and stronger than the workpiece material.
Why is the lathe considered a versatile machine?
It performs turning, facing, threading, drilling, milling, and gear cutting.
What is turning in a lathe machine?
Removal of metal from the outer diameter of a rotating cylindrical workpiece.
How is the workpiece held during turning?
In a chuck or between centers.
What is step turning?
Removing excess material to get steps of different diameters.
What is rough turning?
Fast feed, heavy cut; depth: 2–5 mm.
What is finish turning?
Slow feed, light cut; depth: 0.5–1 mm.
What is facing in lathe operations?
Machining the end of the workpiece to make it flat.
How is the facing tool fed?
Perpendicular to the axis of rotation.
Why should the workpiece be close to the chuck jaws during facing?
For safe and stable machining.
What is grooving in lathe operations?
Forming a narrow cavity (groove) on a cylinder, cone, or face.
What are other names for grooving?
Recessing, under-cutting, necking.
What is parting-off?
Cutting the workpiece to the desired size using a parting-off tool.
What is knurling?
Forming serrations or diamond patterns for better grip on the workpiece.
What tool is used in knurling?
A tool with 1 or 2 steel rollers with teeth (fine, medium, or coarse).
What speed is used in knurling?
Very slow cutting speed.
What is forming?
Reshaping the workpiece without material removal or addition.
What is form turning?
Creating a concave, convex, or irregular shape using a form tool.
What is special about the form tool?
Its cutting edge has the required shape to be transferred to the workpiece.
