ICAO Holding speed
- up to 14000 ft: 230kts
- 14000 ft to 20000 ft: 240kts
- 20000 ft to 34000 ft: 265kts
- above 34000 ft: 0.83 Mach
What is the critical Mach number?
The critical Mach number is the aircraft’s Mach speed at which the airflow over the wing become sonic.
Subsonic aircraft experiences a rapid rise in drag above the critical Mach number, and because the engine does not have available power to maintain its speed and lift under these conditions, the aircraft suffers a loss of lift.
What is Mach Number?
Mach number is the true airspeed indication, given as the percentage relative to the speed of sound.
What is Dutch roll?
Dutch roll is an oscillatory instability, normally associated with swept-wing jet aircraft. It is a combination of out-of-phase yawing and rolling motion.
When the aircraft yaws, it develops into a roll. The yaw itself is not significant but the roll is much more noticeable and unstable. This is so because the aircraft suffers from continuous reverse rolling action.
What does ISA stand for?
International Standard Atmosphere
ICAO ISA conditions at mean sea level:
Temperature is at 15°C with an Environmental Lapse rate of around 2°C per 1000ft until the tropopause is reached;
Pressure is at 1013 hectoPascals and decreases with altitude, falls at about 1hPa per 30ft gained in lower levels of atmosphere (up to 5000ft)
Density of air is 1.225kg/m3
What is ITCZ?
ITCZ stands for Intertropical Convergence Zone.
It is a narrow ‘frontal’ zone near thermal equator, in which intense, convective instability had been triggered by convergence. It is an active zone characterised by severe thunderstorm and torrential rain.
The effect of the ITCZ determines the weather pattern over a significant portion of the globe.
