Lateral Skull Landmarks Flashcards
What makes up the zygomatic arch?
Zygomatic process of the temporal bone and the temporal process of the zygoma
What is the pterygomaxillary fissure?
The gap between the lateral pterygoid plate and the posterior aspect of the maxilla
What is the inferior orbital fissure?
It is found between the maxilla and the great wing of the sphenoid
What attaches to the superior temporal line?
The temporalis fascia
What does the inferior temporal line mark?
It marks the outline of the attachment of the temporalis muscle
What is the pterion?
Pterion is the junction of the temporal bone, parietal bone, and the great wing of the sphenoid. It marks the position of the middle meningeal artery internally
What is the temporal fossa?
The temporal fossa is the area below the superior temporal line and above the zygomatic arch
What is the infratemporal fossa?
The area medial to the ramus of the mandible and inferior to the zygomatic arch from the lateral view
What is the coronal suture a junction of?
Parietal and frontal bones
What is the sagital suture a junction of?
two parietal bones
What is the lamboid suture a junction of?
The occipital bone and the two parietal bones
Anterior cranial fossa
Where the frontal lobe of the brain is situated
Middle cranial fossa
Where the temporal lobe of the brain is situated
Posterior cranial fossa
Where the cerebellum is situated
What does the superior orbital fissure transmit?
The opthalmic division of the trigeminal nerve V1
What does the foramen rotundum transmit?
The maxillary division of the trigeminal nerve V2
What does the foramen ovale transmit?
The mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve V3
What does the foramen spinosum transmit?
The middle meningeal artery
What passes through the carotid canal?
Internal carotid artery
From the internal aspect of the skull, what does the carotid canal itself cross?
The foramen lacerum
What is the trigeminal cave?
It is the depression formed by the trigeminal ganglion
What are the hiati for the petrosal nerves?
Small openings on the anterior slope of the petrosus temporal bone
Where does the groove for the greater petrosal nerve pass toward?
It passes toward the foramen lacerum and internal carotid artery
Where does the groove for the lesser petrosal nerve pass toward?
The foramen ovale
What transmits through the internal acoustic meatus?
Cranial nerves VII and VIII
What happens at the jugular foramen?
Internal jugular vein begins and cranial nerves IX, X, and XI pass through
What transmits through the hypoglossal canal?
Cranial Nerve XII
Where does the brain stem lay?
Up against the Clivus
How does the sigmoid sinus end?
It ends by passing out the jugular foramen and becoming the internal jugular vein
