The Sebasteion at Aphrodesias
Constructed between 20-6 AD. In Turkey, so showing influence outside of Rome, especially as it was paid for by wealthy families native to Aphrodesias. Dedicated to Aphrodite and the Julio-Claudian emperors, who are depicted on the third storey, alongside and as near-equals to the gods.
Augustus’ panel shows him victorious over a soldier next to Nike, who he is larger than. He is also nude, typical of the depiction of deities.
Suetonius
Quotes spread across the themes, but he was writing under Hadrian (121 AD), long after Augustus’ death.
He could write more candidly about his rule, and had access to public documents, letters, and biographies to inform his writing. He liked hearsay and scandals, but wouldn’t have been allowed to invent false information.
