LAST RESORT study Flashcards
Name an atypical bacteria causing pneumonia
Mycoplasma Pneumoniae
Characteristics of Mycoplasma pneumoniae
Common in young healthy adults
No cell wall, select antibiotics
CRX findings: diffuse interstitial pattern, ground-glass opacity, nodules on CT scan
Characteristics of Streptococcus pneumoniae
Most common cause of pneumonia.
Seen in very young and old people, smokers, alcoholics and post-influenza.
Gram-positive, Diplococci
Lobar/airspace pneumonia and air bronchograms are detectable
Rust-coloured sputum
Empyema
2 types of selected populations’ bacterial pneumoniae
- Staphylococcus aureus
- Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Characteristics of staphylococcus aureus
Hospital acquired
Most common cause of death during influenza epidemics
Acquired in post-influenza, elderly and children
Gram-positive, clusters
Can be MSSA or MSRA
Bronchopneumonia: multiple lobes, and pleural effusion in 50% of cases.
Empyema.
Example of viral pneumonia
Influenza
Characteristics of influenza
common in elderly with chronic ilnesses and children.
Lab tests show elevated white cell count and sputum has minimal bacteria and neutrophis.
Diffuse interstitial pattern.
ARDS, dry cough
Characteristics of pseudomonas aeruginosa
Most common hospital-acquired
Common in people with underlying lung disease (COPD or CF) or immunocompromised.
Gram-negative
Rod opportunistic pathogen with high bacterial resistance.
Purulent green sputum.
