Social Categorisation
Process of grouping individuals based on social information
Individualistic cultures
Individual prioritised own self -interest, independence and self-sufficiency is important.
Collectivist cultures
Group is of primary importance, and an individual must change oneself to fit into a group.
Media Portayal of stereotypes
Media uses stereotypes for satire or to tell a story.
Harm from stereotypes
Stereotypes in media can affect how people think and behave towards particular ethnic or cultural groups
Stereotype 1 (BB)
Children of Indian parents are controlled by their own parents and are unable to speak to women
Raj is unable to speak back to his parents over facetime and can only talk to women when he is drunk
Stereotype 2 (BB)
Objectifiying women
When Penny offers to join Raj in a celebration for his accomplishment he embodies a sense of entitlement and privilege regarding how she should dress and feels owed sex.

Gives the impression that all elderly Indians are authoritarian and that young Indian men are tentative individuals when it comes to women

This stereotype is helpful when portrayed in the media as it is encourages men to pursue hobbies not considered traditionally masculine.

Encourages men to become involved caretakers within their own families
