Last days of Jesus' life Flashcards
The Last Supper
Jesus spoke about his forthcoming death and how he wanted his disciples to serve each other and spread the world of the Lord.
Jesus gave the disciples bread and wine to have (body and blood).
Remember this through the Eucharist.
Luke 22:19
‘And he took the bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying This is my body, given up for you, do this in remembrance of me’
Luke 22:26
‘The greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves’
John 14:26
‘The Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things, and remind you of everything I have said to you’
Jesus’ betrayal, arrest, trial
One of Jesus’ disciples Judas Iscariot betrayed him by bringing in an armed crowd to take Jesus away when him and the other disciples planned to stay the night in the garden of Gethsemane. This is where Jesus got arrested.
Jesus was found guilty of blasphemy for claiming to be the Son of God. They believed it was a great crime which should be punished with death.
Jesus was then taken to Pontius Pilate who sentenced Jesus to death even though Pilate thought he was innocent.
Luke 23:22 (Pontius Pilate)
‘Why? What crime has this man committed? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty’
Jesus’ crucifixion
Jesus was nailed to the cross and left to die. He was crucified between two criminals.
For Christians, his death is seen to be a sacrifice to free the sins of his followers. His death brought about the forgiveness of humanity’s sins.
It is remembered on Good Friday
Luke 23:20-11
‘Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again. But they kept shouting, Crucify him! Crucify him!’
Luke 23:46
‘Jesus called out with a loud voice, Father into your hands, I commit my spirit. When he had said this, he breathed his last’
