Larynx/Pharynx Flashcards
What epithelium lines the true vocal cords?
Stratified squamous
What laryngeal muscle is responsible for normal breathing?
Posterior cricoarytenoid. This is the only abductor of the vocal cords.
What is the innervation of the cricothyroid muscle?
external branch of superior laryngeal
What are the three descriptive divisions of the pharynx?
nasopharynx, oropharynx and laryngopharynx
What is the origin of the superior constrictor?
pterygomandibular raphe
What is the origin of the middle constrictor?
hyoid bone
What is the origin of the inferior constrictor?
thyroid cartilage (thyropharyngeus) and cricoid cartilage (cricopharynegeus)
Which muscle acts as upper oesophageal sphincter?
cricopharyngeus (an inferior constrictor)
What is the origin/insertion/innervation of the stylopharyngeus?
styloid process to interval between superior and middle constrictor muscles. glossopharyngeal nerve.
What are the three major neck branches of the vagus?
pharyngeal, superior laryngeal and recurrent laryngeal
What does the pharyngeal nerve innervate?
motor to muscles of pharynx and soft palate
What does the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve innervate?
cricothyroid muscle and cricopharyngeal part of inferior constrictor
What gives the sensory innervation to the nasopharynx?
maxillary nerve via the the pharyngeal branch of the sphenopalatine ganglion
What are the extrinsic muscles of the larynx, and what do they do?
suprahyoids and infrahyoids, involved in movements of larynx during swallowing
Which muscles abduct the vocal cords?
posterior cricoarytenoid muscle
