Larynx Flashcards
Where is the larynx located?
Anterior neck
connecting the oropharynx and the trachea
What is the role of the larynx?
Protection of passages
How many cartilages on the larynx and how many paired and unpaired?
9 cartilages
3 paired
3 unpaired
What are the paired cartilages?
Arytenoid
Corniculate
Cuneiform
What are the unparied cartilages?
Thyroid
Cricoid
Epiglottis
What is the largest cartilage?
Thyroid
What do the two laminae on the thyroid form?
The laryngeal prominence- thyroid notch
What does the thyroid cartilage connect?
Thyroid cartilage - hyoid bone
What connects cricoid and thyroid cartilage?
Cricothyroid membrane
How does the cricoid cartilage attach to 1st tracheal ring?
Cricotracheal ligament
Where is the eppiglottis located?
Post. to the root of the tongue and hyoid bone
ant to the inlet of larynx
What does the eppiglottis form?
Superior margin of laryngeal inlet
Function of eppiglottis?
Seal off the trachea during swallowing to prevent aspiration
How is the eppiglottis connected to the thyroid cartilage?
Thyroeppiglotic ligament
What does the quadrangular membrane do?
Connects the eppiglottis to arytenoid cartilages
What does the upper border of the quadrangular membrane form?
vestibular ligament and fold
What does the lower border of the quadrangular membrane form?
Ary-epiglottic ligamnets and folds
Where is the laryngeal cavity located?
Between the laryngeal inlet adn inferior border of the cricoid cartilage
What are present in the laryngeal cavity?
Laryngeal verstibule
Middle region of the cavity
Laryngeal ventricle
Infra-glotic cavity
What does each vocal fold contain?
Vocal ligament and vocalis muscle
What is the role of the vocal folds?
Control the production of sound
Closes larynx to prevent choking
What is the rima glottidis
aperature located between vocal folds
changes shape depending depending on the vocal folds
What are the laryngeal muscles
Cricothyroid muscles Thyro-arytenoid muscles Vocalis muscle Post. crico-arytenoid muscle lateral crico-arytenoid muscle Transverse and oblique arytenoid
What is the only laryngeal muscle innervated by the external laryngeal nerves
Crico-thyroid muscle
