Larynx Flashcards
Function of larynx
▪️musculoligamentus structure with cartilaginous framework
▪️continuous with trachea
▪️acts like a valve to clos the lower respiratory tract
▪️produces sound
Parts of the larynx
▪️epiglottis cartilage ▪️thyroid cartilage ▪️cricoid cartilage ▪️cuneiform cartilage ▪️corniculate cartilage ▪️arytenoid cartilage ▪️hyoid bone
Vocal chords
▪️from thyroid cartilage to arytenoids
▪️vocal ligaments connects cord to cricoid cartilage underneath
Larynx blood supply
- common carotid
- external carotid
- superior thyroid
- superior laryngeal
- subclavian
- thyrocervical trunk
- inferior thyroid
- inferior laryngeal
Innervation of larynx
▪️vagus nerve X
-superior laryngeal- sensory above vocal folds (internal/external)
-recurrent laryngeal-sensory below vocal folds (RRL hooks underneath right subclavian artery then ascends upwards to larynx, LRL hooks under arch of aorta)
▪️R and L RL supply intrinsic muscles of larynx expect for cricothyroid muscles which are supplied by ESL
