Larynx Flashcards
What are the three main fuctions of the larynx?
Airway (upper respiratory)
Organ of phonation (voice box)
Valve during swallowing ( Larynx is shut off to prevent aspiraton into the respiratory system)
The laryngeal prominence is located at which vertebra level?
C4
Very large and noticible in males
The skeleton of the larynx is formed with?
Hyaline Cartilage
What are the three unpaired cartilages that are part of the larynx?
Thyroid Cartilage
Cricoid Cartilage
Epiglottis
This cartilage is a paired cartilage that is the shape of a pyramid?
Arytenoid Cartilage
The thyroid cartilage forms a synovial joint with which other cartilage?
Inferior horn of thryoid cartilage forms a synovial joint with the Cricoid cartilage
Identify this structure in green
Thyroid cartilage
This cartilage has a dymorphism. In which the male structure is different from the female. Identify the structure and which is male or female
Throid CArtilage is a dymorphism
Incomplete ring
Left - male (larger and sharper angle)
Right - female (broader, shorter, and smaller)
This cartilage is the only respiratory cartilage that is complete?
Cricoid cartilage
(looks like the first trachial ring anteriorly)
Identify the structure in green
Epiglottis
(cartilage above the glottis)
Atached to thyroid cartilage and extends above hyoid bone
The arytenoid cartilage ahs two processes. What are they?
Muscular process (muscles of the larynx attach here
Vocal process (where vocal cords attach)
What is the function of the Arytenoid cartilage?
Affects the tension of the vocal cords and the muscles
Sits on the back of cricoid and forms a synovial joint
What connects the hyoid bone to the thyroid cartilage?
The thyrohyoid membrane
What are the external ligaments of the larynx?
Thyrohyoid membrane
Median Cricothyroid Ligament
What pierces the thyrohyoid membrane?
The internal laryngeal nerve (and superior laryngeal artery and vein)
innervates upper half og larynx w/ sensory + autonomic innervation
