Q
Cartilage of the Larynx - Cartilage Types
A
Hyaline Cartilage
- Thyroid Cartilage
- Cricoid Cartilage
- Arytenoid Cartilages
Elastic Cartilage
- Epiglottic Cartilage
- Corniculate Cartilage
- Cuneiform Cartilage
3
Q
Cartilage of the Larynx - Unpaired/Paired
A
Unpaired
- Thyroid Cartilage
- Cricoid Cartilage
- Epiglottic Cartilage
Paired
- Arythenoid Cartilage
- Corniculate Cartilage
- Cuneiform Cartilage
4
Q
Ligaments/Membranes of the Larynx - Extrinsic
A
- Thyrohoid Membrane (THM)
- Lateral thyrohoid ligament - extends from the superior horn of the thyroid cartilage to the posterior end of the greater horn of the hyoid bone
- Median Thyrohyoid ligament - thickened midline fibers of the THM
- Median Cricothyroid ligament
- Cricotracheal ligament
5
Q
Ligaments/Membranes of the Larynx - Intrinsic
A
- Conus Elasticus - from superior/medial border of the cricoid cartilage to the true vocal cord
- Vocal Ligament - arytenoid to thyroid cartilage
- Quadrangular Membrane - lateral epiglottis to the arytenoid; superior margin = aryepiglottic fold
- Vestibular ligament - inferior border of the Quadrangular membrane; is the vestibular fold in larynx
6
Q
Muscles of the Larynx (7)
A
- Cricothyroid Muscle
- Thyroarytenoid Muscle
- Posterior Cricoarytenoid Muscle
- Lateral Cricoarytenoid Muscle
- Transverse Arytenoid Muscle
- Oblique Arytenoid Muscle
- Vocalis Muscle
7
Q
Cricoid Muscle - Facts
A
- Origin/Insertion: Arch of Cricoid Cartilage/Lamina of the inferior horn of the thyroid cartilage
- Function: increases the tension on the vocal ligaments
- Only laryngeal muscle that is innervated by the external laryngeal nerve; all other laryngeal muscles are innervated by the recurrent laryngeal nerve.
8
Q
Thyroarytenoid Muscle - Facts
A
- Origin/Insertion: Thyroid Cartilage/Arytenoid cartilage
2. Function: decreases tension on the vocal ligament.
9
Q
Thyroepiglottic Muscle - Facts
A
- Is an extension of the thyroarytenoid muscle into the aryepiglottic fold
10
Q
Posterior Cricoarytenoid Muscle - Facts
A
- Origin/Insertion: Posterior lamina of the cricoid cartilage/muscular process of the arytenoid cartilage
- Function: abducts the true vocal cords/opens the glottis/glottic chink
