Larynx Flashcards
Thyroid Cartilage…
Surrounds and protects the glottis and trachea entrance, forms anterior and posterior laryngeal walls, attachment for laryngeal muscles and ligaments - large unpaired cartilages
Cricoid cartilage…
A complete ring that surrounds the trachea
and provides support to the larynx - large unpaired cartilages
Epiglottis…
Leaf-shaped, protective structure
when swallowing: drops to cover entry into larynx - large unpaired cartilages
Arytenoid…
Pyramid shaped and connected to the cricoid - smaller paired cartilage
Corniculate…
Cone shape-like and sit on top of the arytenoids - smaller paired cartilage
Cuneiform…
Cone shaped and stiffens or tense the aryepiglottic folds - smaller paired cartilage
Supraglottic/ vestibule…
area from the laryngeal opening to vestibular folds (Cavity)
Ventricle/sinus…
area between the vestibular and vocal folds (Cavity)
Infraglottic cavity…
area from the vocal fold to the lower border of the cricoid (Cavity)
Glottis
space between vocal folds when they are open/abducted - Region
