What is laryngitis?
An inflammation of the larynx which especially affects children
How long does acute and chronic laryngitis last?
Acute < 3 weeks
Chronic > 3 weeks
What cells are within the larynx?
Goblet cells - secrete mucous
Columnar cells - Cilia
**Columnar cells are susceptible to hyperplasia in chronic laryngitis
What are the causes of acute laryngitis?
Viral
Bacterial - strep pneumonia, Haemophiluz influenza
overuse of the voice
What are the causes of chronic laryngitis?
allergies
chronic exposure to irritants (smoke)
severe acid reflux
overuse of the voice
What are the signs and symptoms of laryngitis?
Dysphonia
Dysphagia
Dyspnoea
Cough
What investigations can be done?
Laryngoscopy - can take a biopsy if needed
What are the complications of laryngitis?
Laryngeal cancer
Epiglottitis
What is the treatment for acute laryngitis?
Fluids
Rest vocal cords
Pain medication
What is treatment for chronic laryngitis?
Treat the underlying cause
