Q

Wood drills and ship auger bits (3)

A

Correct diameter: 1/2 cable for 3/4 bit

Can have gas or electric drill (gas is dirtier and has carcinogens but electric requires cables and power source. Can buy cleaner gas but much more expensive)

Bits have drill head with spiralling that “cuts out” wood - need to put weight into it

Q

Rock drills and bits (5)

A

Correct diameter: 1/2 cable = 9/16 bit or leave 1/16 gap for epoxy

Gas or electric available but gas very heavy

Bit is meant to drill (hammer drill) so no need to put pressure, as pressure might cause damage

Heat - need to clean and grease bit, and change it for every hole drilled to avoid damaging it, as they can be expensive

Drill to 10-inch depth

Q

What needs to be considered when drilling into the log? (5)

A

Forced that will be acting on the structure

Rock hole location

Cable orientation

Where the “meat” of the log is

How this hole sets up the rest of the attachment point to the boulder

Q

What needs to be considered when drilling into the rock? (3)

A

Orientation of the rock with respect to the wood holes and epoxy after drilling to depth

Potential chipping (drill perpendicularly to rock surface)

Proximity to other drilled holes, edge of rock, fissures - “Zone of Influence”

Q

What are the steps to cleaning rock holes? (5)

A

Clean drill dust off rock, rinse with water

Fully flush out hole with water

Scrub with wire brush

Repeat steps 2 and 3 three times or until hole is clean

Suck out remnants and check for turbidity

Q

What are the steps to running cable? (4)

A

Tape end of cable whenever going through hole

No tape when going into the rock

Measuring tool to estimate excess

Cut and leave until 10 rock holes are ready to go

Q

What are the steps to epoxy application? (8)

A
Nozzle extension secured
Ensure both tubes pop at same time
Baffles mix 2-parts
Nozzle to bottom of hole, back off 1/2 inch
Squeeze until you see epoxy at surface
Press button to release pressure
One finger on hole, remove straw
Inject cable, do not move until fully cured
