cervical mucous is thick and sticky after ovulation
cervix is high, soft, open when fertile
cervix is low, hard and closed when infertile

What effect does Depo Provera have?
inhibits ovulation
also has effect on cervical mucous and endometrium
What is Depo provera made of and how often is it administered
Progesterone only
injection given every three months
When can Depo Provera be started?
up to and including day 5 of cycle
if started at any other time, female must be certain she isnt pregnant and must also either use condoms or abstain for 7 days
What are side effects of Depo Provera
weight gain, delay in return of fertility, bleeding, osteoporosis
What is IUD
intra-uterine device
not hormonal
T shaped, made of copper and plastic
prevents fertilisation and causes inflammation of endometrium
What is IUS
Intra-uterine system hormonal Levonogesterel Renders endometrium unfavourable for implantation also effects cervical mucous
what are contraindications to IUS/IUD
Pelvic inflammation abnormal uterine anatomy Pregnancy Gestational trophoblastic disease cancer
When can IUD be fitted
in first seven days of period without cover contraceptive
can be fitted any time if certain not pregnant (with cover contraceptive)
can be used as EC up to 5 days after UPSI
within 48 hrs or >4 weeks post partum
immediately after TOP
