Histology Flashcards
Name the layers of the Ovary from outer to inner
Outer Fibrous Cortex
Cortex
Medulla (containing connective tissue, vasculature, nerves and lymphatics)
What epithelium lines the ovary
Simple cuboidal
What is Oogenesis
development of oocyte from oogonia
How do oogonia form
in embryonic development, germ cells from yolk sac invade ovary and proliferate via mitosis to form oogonia
What is folliculogenesis
growth of follicle from oocyte and support cells
How many follicles will develop per day in a 20 year old
15
For follicle to form, what cells must oocyte associate with
Pre-granulosa cell
Name layers of follicle from inner to outer and describe each
oocyte zona pellucida - made from extracellular matrix zona granulosa - cuboidal cells theca interna - made from inner stromal cells - secrete oestrogen precursor which is converted to oestrogen by granulosa cells theca externa - fibroblast like
what layer does the fluid filled follicle antrum form in
zona granulosa
What is the largest follicle named
Graafian follicle
After ovulation what does graafian follicle become
Corpus luteum
Once corpus luteum has formed, what do theca and granulosa cells secrete
oestrogen and progesterone
If fertilisation does not occur, what does corpus luteum become?
Corpus albicans
white connective tissue
Name the sections of the fallopian tube starting with the fimbrae moving inward towards uterus
fimbrae
infundibulum
ampulla
isthmus
Where does fertilisation normally occur
ampulla
What epithelium is ampulla lined with
simple columnar with ciliated cells and secretory cells surrounded by smooth muscle
What is the lining epithelium in isthmus
secretory epithelium surrounded by smooth muscle
name layers of uterine wall going from inner to outer and describe each
endometrium - secretory mucosa containing glands myometrium - 3 layers of smooth muscle perimetrium - loose connective tissue
Name layers of endometrium
stratum functionalis stratum basalis (reserve tissue, regenerates stratum functionalis)
Name the menstrual phases of endometrium and what days they occur
Menstrual days 1-5
Proliferative days 6-14
Luteal (secretory) days 14-28
How is endometrium shed during menses
arterioles constrict cutting off blood supply to endometrium tissue, causing ischaemia and necrosis. Tissue is then shed with blood. Fibrinolysis stops scar tissue formation
What kind of mucosa lines the cervix on vaginal side of transition zone and uterine side of transition zone
vaginal - stratified squamous
uterine - simple columnar (with endocervical glands)
What is cervical mucous like before and after ovulation
before in proliferative phase, mucous is thin and watery
after ovulation it is thick
What mucosa is vagina lined with
non-keratinised stratified squamous
What are the layers of vagina going from inner to outer
non-keratinised stratified squamous
lamina propria
fibromuscular layer
adventitia
