Laptop Hardware Flashcards
What type of memory does a laptop use?
SO-DIMM (Small outline dual in-line memory mode)
What is the form factor for Laptop storage?
2.5 in form factors (3.5 inches for desktops)
What does SSD stand for
Solid State Drive
M.2 Drive
Smaller form factor, speed driven no SATA involved
What is Twisted Nematic?
Twisted Nematic - The original, great for gaming, Poor viewing angles
What is In-Plane Switching?
In Plane Switching - Excellent color representation, More expensive to produce then TN
What is Vertical Alignment?
A good compromise between TN and IPS, Good color representation, Slower response times then TN LCD Display
What is LCD Tech?
Liquid Crystal Display - Light shines through liquid crystals
Advantages: Lightweight, Relatively low power consumption,
Relatively inexpensive
Disadvantages: Black levels are a challenge, Requires separate black light
OLED
Organic Light Emitting Diode - Organic compound emits light when receiving an electric current
Tablets, phones and smart watches - Higher cost than LCD
RJ11 connector
Telephone or DSL connection
RJ45 connector
Modular connector for Ethernet
Fiber connections
LC - Local Connector
ST - Straight Tip Connector
SC - Subscriber Connector - Square connector
What is Memory?
Random Access Memory (RAM) is the most common
RAM is not referring to the hard drive or SSD storage
Data is stored permanently
SDRAM - Synchronous DRAM (SDRAM)
Double Data Rate 3 (DDR3) SDRAM
Double Data Rate 4 (DDR4) SDRAM
Double Data Rate 5 (DDR5) SDRAM
RAID 0
Striping
File blocks are split between two or more physical drives
Raid 0 is zero redundancy
RAID 1
Mirroring
File blocks are duplicated between two or more physical drives
Required disk space is doubled
High redundancy
RAID 5
Striping with parity
File blocks are striped
Along with a parity block
Requires at least 3 disks
High redundancy
RAID 10 (1+0)
A stripe of mirrors
The speed of striping, with the redundancy of mirroring
Need at least 4 drives
BIOS
Basic Input/Output System - The software used to start your computer
POST
Power-On-Self-Test
Look for a boot loader - Start the operating system
UEFI BIOS
Unified Extensible Firmware Interface - Graphical and text-based
Virtualization
Run other operating systems within a single hardware platform
Case Fan Specifications
Standard sizes - 80 mm, 120 mm, 200 mm
How do you reset a boot password?
Reset password with a Jumper
What is TDP and what units is it measured in?
Thermal Design Power // Watts
