Noun
A word that names an object, place or person.
Adjective
A describing word.
Verb
An action word.
Adverb
A word that describes an action, usually ending in -ly.
Simile
Comparing one thing to another using the word ‘like’ or ‘as’.
Metaphor
Describing one thing as if it is another.
Personification
Describing an object as if it is a person.
Imagery
Creating a visual image with descriptive words.
Pathetic fallacy
When the weather reflects a character’s emotions.
Emotive language
Words that cause the reader to have an emotional reaction.
Pronoun
A word used to refer to a person, such as ‘I’, ‘me’, ‘we’, ‘you’.
Repetition
Saying a word or phrase again and again for effect.
Rhetorical question
A question that the reader answers in their mind, rather than out loud.
Semantic field
A range of words that all relate to the same topic or idea.
Triple/ tricolon
The rule of three-grouping adjectives, adverbs or descriptive phrases into threes for effect.
