Stylistics
studying texts by paying close attention to their language (key concerns, themes, possible effects)
- > Focused + Systematic: focus on language itself (don’t stray into unnecessary comments, avoid being vague)
- > Transparent: focus on what’s in the text, demonstrate how closely/ accurately u can explore features + patterns (avoid ‘showing off’/ being over-the-top)
- > Interpretative: analysis which explains features + build into a wider sense of meaning (avoid listing)
Literary canon:
collection of authors/ texts that’s considered ‘high status’ + especially worthy of study

language use - (spatial, temporal, person) deixis, context dependent
Discourse examples
boulomaic, deontic, epistemic modality. Positive and negative face needs, face threatening act
Phonetics examples
articulatory, acoustic, auditive
e.g. how the letter “b” in the word “bed” is spoken
