Onomatopoeia
A word that imitates a sound. E.g. Bang into the pole Crash into the tallest building Slam by the monster.
Similes
A comparison where one thing is compared to another,using the word like or as…as.
E.g
Eating ice-cream is like being in heaven.
The boy shine like the sun.
The man is brave like eagle
Metaphor
A comparison where one thing is said to actually be another.
E.g
When I eat ice-cream I am in heaven
Personification
representation of an abstract quality in human form.
E.g
He did not realise that his last chance was walking out the door.
Alliteration
The repetition of the same sound at beginning of word to create an effect.
E.g
Great Goal
Pattern of three
Listing three things to create a specific effect.
E.g.
Stop,look,listen.
Language for emotive effect
It describes words and phrases meant to feeling an emotional response to a subject.
E.g.
The defenceless kittens were crammed into the box.
Rhetorical question
A question that is asked for effect rather than for an answer.
E.g.
Who wants to look at something like that?
Adjective
A word that describes a place, person or thing.
E.g
A beautiful sunset
Verb
It a doing or being word that has a tense.
E.g. I swam across the lake.
Phrase
A group of words that can be understood as a unit.
E.g. Around the race track
Clause
A type of phrase that includes a subject and an active verb.
E.g. The book that you lent me is very interesting.
Simple sentence
The most basic form of sentence, consisting of a subject and a verb.
E.g. He ran.
Compound sentence
A sentence that contain two independent clauses joined by a coordinating.
E.g.We had a difficult essay so i worked hard at it.
Complex sentence
a sentence containing a subordinate clause or clauses.
E.g. The new student,who was very timid, asked for some help.
