syntax (begin to combine words to create 1-4 word utterances)
Mean Length of utterance (MLU)
Average length of utterance in a 50-100 utterance sample. Used to track syntax growth and developmental norms

lexicon grows, MLU increases, articulation continues to become more clear

Language disorder
Occurs when an individual exhibits significant & persistent difficulties with comprehension and/or expression of spoken/written language when compared to other children at a similar age or linguistic/cultural background
Specific Language Disorder
a child who presents with a language disorder who are otherwise developing typically
-typically diagnosed after age 3
Intellectual Disability
A child under the age of 18, w/ mental abilities significantly below what is expected for their age
-Can co-occur with other disabilities such as autism and cerebral palsy
What can we use to evaluate language disorders?
history, interview, obs., formal/informal testing
