Concrete
Words that refer to tangible objects-people, places, and things.
Abstract
Words that refer to ideas or concepts -qualities, or attributes, humility, science, progress and philosophy
Clutter
Discourse that takes many more words than are necessary to express an idea.
Imagery
Imagery: the use of vivid language to create mental images of objects, actions, or ideas.
ex. imagery make their ideas come alive. Concrete words, simile, and metaphors build a speakers imagery.
Rhythm
The pattern of sounds in a speech created by the choice and arraignment of words.
Metaphor
Comparison not using like or as between two things that are essential different yet have something in common.
America’s cities are the windows through which the world looks at American society.

Comparison introduced with the words like or as between two things that different yet have something in common.. ex. walking into my grandparents’ home when I was a child was like being wrapped in a giant security blanket.
Parallelism
The similar arrangement of a pair or series of related works, phases, or sentences.
Ex. I speak as a Republican. I speak as a women. I speak as a United States Senator. I speak as an American.
Repetition
Reiteration of the same word or set of words at the beginning or end successive clause or sentence.
Ex. If not now, when? If not us, who? If not together, how?
We do not give up, we do not quit, we do not allow fear or division break our spirit.
Alliteration
Repetition of initial consonant sound of close or adjoining words.
Ex. Peace is essential for progress, but progress is no less essential for peace.
Nothing great is accomplished without cooperation, compromise, and common cause.
Antithesis
The association of contrasting ideas, usually parallel structure, Ask not for your can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.
Let us never negotiate out of fear. But let us never fear to negotiate.
Inclusive Language
Language that does not stereotype, demean, or patronize, people on the basis of gender, race, religion, disability, sexual orientation or other factors.
