Pathetic Fallacy
When the weather or atmosphere describes the mood.
If it is really sunny people are typically really happy.
Personification
When a non-human is given human qualities.
The pen was sitting on the table.
Simile
When you compare two things using like or as.
He was as strong as an ox.
She was like a gazelle.
Metaphor
When you compare two things using is or are.
She is a monster.
You are a monster.
Extended Metaphor
When you pick a metaphor, and basically turn it into a long metaphor and explain it.
Life is a roller-coaster you can never prepare for the ups and downs that it will bring.
Oxymoron
When you have two opposite words side by side.
The small giant.
Juxtaposition
When you have two opposite ideas, basically you take an oxymoron and explain it. When you pick a oxymoron, and basically turn it into a long oxymoron and explain it.
The small giant was tiptoeing trying to reach the top however his small arms and puny fingers could not reach.
Symbolism
When objects are linked and present meaning.
If I wore a face mask you would all think covid.
Semantic Field
When words across an extract can be linked to one idea.
A ring, gloves, and referee these word link to the idea/ field of boxing.
Irony
When events in the text it self even surprises the characters.
When Scrooge changes in a Christmas Carol because you never would have expect Scrooge to change.
Rhetorical Question
A question that does not require an answer.
How would you feel if you had to wear a face mask all day.
Hyperbole
When you over exaggerate.
I’m so angry I’m going to kill him.
Assonance
The repetition of the vowel sound.

Alliteration
When words in row begin with the same letter.
The big blue ball bounced down the road.
Sibilance
When words in a row begin with the letter S or sound.
The snake was slowly hissing.
Euphemism
When you say something in an indirect manner.
You don’t have long left. (you are saying they are going to die in a nice way)
Emotive Language
When the writer makes the reader feel a particular emotion.
The man ran as fast as he could but he couldn’t get away. (excitement)
Onomatopoeia
When a word describes a sound.

Facts/ Stats
When the writer uses fact to support what they are saying.

When you give people animal features.

Opinion
To express strong stand in writing.
Bullying is wrong and people who allow it to happen are just as bad.
Repetition
When the writer repeats a word or phrase for effect.

Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives, and Adverbs
When you can’t find any of the 24 you pickup these.
Nouns are naming words, Verbs are doing words, Adverbs are describing words, Adjectives are words that describe the verbs.
