language comprehension Flashcards
what is parsing?
generating deep structure based on the surface structure
Garden path model
minimal attachment = syntactical structure that has the smallest amount of nodes us prefered
support for minimal attachment
Longer fixations for the second = evidence for more difficult processing
support for late closure
Longer fixations and boggling on word seems in the second sentence
Constraint based model
Connectionist model of sentence comprehension
what are the strenghts of the constraint based model?
- using all relevant information seems sensible
predicts flexibility in comprehension
what are the weaknesses of constraint based model?
- predictions are general rather than precise
predictions of the Garden path model?
All sentences are globally ambiguous syntactically so they should take the same time to process
predicitions of the Constraint based model?
For the sentences that are semantically constrained (2 & 3 ) it should be easier to choose the preferred interpretation, so they should be read faster than the unconstrained sentence
predictions for the unrestricted race model?
Sentence 1 should be read fastest as either of the two interpretations can be picked.
what does the unrestricted race model do?
Combines best elements of the Garden-path and the Constraint based model
Semantic and syntactic information are used to identify a syntactic structure
what is the prediction model?
Two components Latent semantic analysis component
Word meaning based on their relations with other words
