Define Compounding
Two nouns are joined to create a new word e.g. manflu, carbon footprint
Define Blending
2 words blended together to make one e.g. smog
Define Affixation
A new word is created with the addition of a prefix or suffix e.g. radicalisation
Define abbreviations
(clippings) from preexisting words e.g. gym - gymnasium
Define eponyms
The name of a person after whom something is named e.g. braille, plimsoll line
Define acronyms
First letter of every word, but pronounced as a word e.g. scuba - self contained underwater breathing apparatus
Define initialism
Made from initial letters and pronounce inital letters. E.g. DNA, OMG
Define conversion
(grammatical shift) - word changes word classes with no additions e.g. google (n) to google (v)
Define coinage
Uncommon process when a new word enters the language e.g. COVID19
Define proprietary eponyms
When one product of a category becomes so popular it is used as a generic term for the rest of the category e.g. Tippex, Hoover
Define loan words
Borrowed words from another language e.g. feng shui, chocolate
