What is pun?
A humorous use of a word or phrase that has several meanings or that sounds like another word
What is metaphor?
A comparison between to unlike things (without using like or as)
What is oxymoron?
Two words used together that have, or seem to have, opposite meanings
What is paradox?
A paradox is a statement that contradicts itself, or that must be both true and untrue at the same time
What is a soliloquy?
A speech in a play that the character speaks to himself or herself or to the people watching rather than to the other characters
What is an aside?
An aside happens when a character’s dialogue is spoken but not heard by the other actors on the stage. Asides are useful for giving the audience special information about the other characters onstage or the action of the plot.
What is a monologue?
A monologue is a long speech given by a single character in a story or drama in which the character speaks AT not TO another character or the audience.
Differentiate Dramatic, Verbal and Situational Irony
Dramatic -> The audience knows something that one or more of the characters do not. Verbal -> When a character says the opposite of what they actually mean. Situational -> When the outcome of a story or action is the opposite of what was expected.
Differentiate Flat v.s. Round characters
Flat -> not well characterized. We know very little about the character/ one dimensional. Round -> Character is very well characterized; a much more complex personality is revealed.
Differentiate Static v.s. Dynamic characters
A static character is one who doesn’t undergo any significant change in character, personality or perspective over the course of a story. A dynamic character, in contrast, undergoes a major transition throughout the story.
