The residents of the Annex feel absolute shock, fear and sadness when they hear about how all the Jews are being rounded up and taken away.

45
Q

Describe the Hanukah dinner scene in Scene Four, Act One

A

During the Hanukah dinner scene, the mood is light and joyful for a change. Anne gives out gifts to everyone in the Annex, until a noise is heard downstairs. Peter knocks over a lamp which creates even more tension. Now, there’s a possibility the thief downstairs has heard there are people hiding in the Annex.

46
Q

Describe Anne’s relationship with her mother

A

Anne has a tense relationship with her mother. She feels her mother doesn’t accept her as she is and is constantly comparing her to her sister Margot. She feels very angry at her mother, and misunderstood by her. Her mother on the other hand, feels completely rejected and shut out by Anne. Anne doesn’t show affection to her the way she does to her father, Mr. Frank.

47
Q

When the thief breaks into the Annex, what conflict does this create?

A

Mr. Van Daan blames Peter for knocking down the lamp. Mr. Frank decided to go downstairs to check on the noise. The residents in the Annex do not want him to as they fear it will confirm their presence in the Annex. Anne faints briefly and in general, there is an air of desperation and fear. It is now a possibility that someone other than Miep and Kraler know they are in hiding. It’s now a matter of time before the Green Police comes knocking.

48
Q

In Act Two, how has Peter and Anne’s relationship evolved? What does Peter say he likes about Anne?

A

In Act Two, Peter and Anne become really close. There is even somewhat of a romantic relationship developing. Anne becomes increasingly interested in Peter, and Peter has changed his mind about the things that used to annoy him about Anne. They are each other’s confidant (person they tell everything to).

Peter says he likes how Anne can stand up for herself in front of the adults. He admires her confidence and strength of character.

49
Q

Describe the moment when Mrs. Frank loses her temper. Why does she and how do the Van Daans react?

A

Mrs. Frank loses all self-control for the first time since they entered into hiding. She yells uncontrollably at Mr. Van Daan and throws him out of the Annex. She says Peter can stay, however, nobody can convince her to calm down or change her mind.
Mrs. Van Daan defends her husband, and Peter vows to follow his parents if they have to leave.

50
Q

A

Peter’s reaction reveals how loyal he is. Despite not getting along with his father, he is not willing to leave him behind.

A

The arrival of the allies against Germany to the coast of Normandy.

52
Q

What moments throughout the play show that Anne is a caring person?

A

Anne expresses true sadness and concern when she hears about what is happening to all the Jews outside of the Annex, she fears for her friend Jopie. Anne shows true concern over Peter, at times even standing up for him. Also, Anne makes sure Hanukah is celebrated accordingly and makes presents for everyone to make everyone feel joyful.

Another instance in which she shows consideration is when she regrets the way she has been acting towards her mother. She is deeply sorry and wants to change her ways. Lastly, for example, she asks Margot if she had been feeling left out since Anne had been hanging out with Peter so much. She shows that she did not intend to completely ignore her sister’s feelings.

53
Q

How would you describe Mr. Frank’s character?

A

Mr. Otto Frank is a calm, gentle man with great leadership skills. He puts other before his own needs and is extremely compassionate. He is strong for his family as they are everything that matters to him. He never loses his temper and never fails to take charge of every situation of crisis.

54
Q

Describe Anne Frank

A

Anne Frank was extraordinary in her vitality, optimism, hunger for knowledge, and creativity. She was also a moody, sensitive young woman who could (by her own admission) occasionally be mean to those around her… though she struggled not to be.

Anne changed in many ways over the two years she was writing her diary. Some of these changes can be described as “growth.” She became an astute observer of politics, and of human nature, and she became a very practiced and well-educated writer. Many of her diary entries suggest a mind mature past her years, and we forget we are reading the work of a teenager.

63
Q

In line 11, Mark Twain says that “an inspiration burst upon” Tom Sawyer. Cite evidence from the text to explain what that inspiration was.

A

Tom’s inspiration is to convince other boys that they want to whitewash the fence for him. He pretends to enjoy it when he tells Ben “I don’t see why I oughtn’t to like it. Does a boy get a chance to whitewash a fence every day?. He acts as if special skill is required until Ben is begging to take over: “there ain’t one boy in a thousand, maybe two thousand, that can do it the way it’s got to be done”.
