Language And Thought Pt.2 Flashcards
What is broca’s area
A region in the frontal lobe that contributes to the motor production of speech
What is broca’s aphasia
Difficulty with the motor production of language
Brocas discoveries led to two important findings, what are they
That there may be a module in the brain controlling speech, and that language production is dominantly controlled by the left hemisphere which helped explain hemispheric lateralization
What is wernicke’s Area
A region in the temporal lobe that contributes to the comprehension of language
What is wernicke’s aphasia (fluent aphasia)
When a person is able to produce language sounds easily but speech memory is impaired, communication lacks meaning
Which non-language area of the brain is connected to broca-s area and might help explain why patients with brocas area struggle to physically produce speech
The motor cortex
What is the mental lexicon
The storage of words and related concepts
What are phonemes and what are morphemes
Phonemes are the smallest sound unit of language, morphemes are the smallest portion of a word that conveys meaning
What are semantics
The definitions of words (the meaning)
What is the sapir-whorf hypothesis (linguistic relativity)
That differences in a languages structure can alter one’s perception and understanding of reality
What is functional fixédness
The tendency to view an object as only having one function and neglecting other uses
What is a mental set
A persons expectation of how to solve a problem
What is an algorithm
A precise set of rules applied in order to solve a problem
What is a representative heuristic
Mentally comparing something to our stored prototype of an event, object, or person
What is the availability heuristic
The idea that people make judgements based on how easily instances of the same or related events are to retrieve from our memory (how available the memories are)
