Language And The Brain Flashcards
What is the basic brain anatomy?
2 cerebral hemispheres Sulcus - veins Gyrus - tissue Grey matter (neurons) White matter (axons) Fluid filled spaces known as CSF (cerebrospinal fluid)
What are the four lobes of the brain?
Frontal
Temporal
Parietal
Occipital
What is aphasia?
The loss of a previously held ability to speak or understand spoken or written language due to disease or injury of the brain
What are the three types of aphasia?
Conduction aphasia
Broca’s /non-fluent aphasia
Wernicke’s /fluent aphasia
What is conduction aphasia?
Damage to white matter pathway
Good comprehension and production
Poor repetition
What is Broca’s aphasia?
Broca’s area close to motor speech area
Difficulties with speech production
What is Wernicke’s aphasia?
Close to auditory areas
Poor comprehension
Where is the activation for language stronger and more extensive?
The left hemisphere (left lateralised)
What are some brain imaging methods?
PET
MRI
MEG
How do we process language?
Meaning - listening
- speaking
- reading
All connected
Where is the sensory activity more prevalent when listening?
Auditory cortex
Where is the sensory activity more prevalent when speaking?
Motor and somatosensory cortex
Where is the sensory activity more prevalent when reading?
Visual cortex
