Language And Gender Flashcards
Otto Jesperson Deficit View
Women’s and men’s language is inherently different as women’s language is deficit
•women talk too much
•half finish sentences because they speak before thinking
•are emotional rather than grammatical
Lakoff’s Deference Model
Women’s language is deferential as they are socialised that way to give the impression that they are weaker than men
•hedges “sort of”
•super politeness “I’d appreciate it”
•Tag questions “that’s mine isn’t it”
Zimmerman and west Dominance model
Men deliberately behave in an uncooperative way to undermine women and dominate them
Overlaps
Interruptions
Delayed responses
Pamela Fishman
Studies young couples and noticed that women used the tag question “y’know” five times more than men because men were acting uncooperative
Victoria DeFransisco
Observed women and noticed:
They introduced more topics
Talked more
Worked harder to keep conversation going
As men control women through this because they reject topics that they do not wish to discuss however every topic that they introduce is accepted women are therefore forced to work harder as men use silence and in expressiveness
Tannen Difference model
Women and men’s language is different due to upbringing and social conditioning- men use language for report talk- “give info”
While women use it for rapport talk “establish and maintain relationships”
