Language Flashcards
Language expresses…
thoughts, creativity, and intelligence
Morphemes are?
Smallest units of language that have meaning (suffixes and prefixes)
Phonemes are?
Basic sounds of speech, building blocks of language
Syntax is?
System of rules that govern how words are combined into phrases and sentences
Semantics are?
Study of the system of meanings that underlie words, phrases, and sentences
What is Aphasia?
deficits in language comprehension and production, usually caused by strokes in the left hemisphere
What part of the brain produces speech?
Broca’s Area
What part of the brain is responsible for speech comprehension?
Wernicke’s Area
What does the left and right hemisphere process to make up language
Left hemisphere: produces, comprehends
Right hemisphere: processes rhythm of speech and interpretation/ understanding metaphors
What is Whorf’s linguistic relativity theory?
language determines thought, we can think only through language
Joint Attention
early interactions with caregivers lay the groundwork for children’s acquisition of language
True or False: Language spoken by mothers during pregnancy influences listening preferences in newborns
True
What is the path of speech production?
3-5 months: coo and laugh
5-7 months: babbling, consonants and vowels
7-8 months: babble in syllables (bababa, deedeedee)
1 year: first words (typically labels of items in environment, simple action words, quantifiers, qualities or adjectives, socially interactive words, internal states)
18-24 months: start putting words together, vocabulary grows rapidly, missing words and grammar
What is the use of rudimentary sentences that are missing words and grammatical markers but follow a logical syntax and convey meaning
Telegraphic speech
True or False: Deaf babies will babble with their hands like hearing infants with their sounds
True
Creole
a language that evolves over time from the mixing of existing languages
Pidgin
informal creole that lacks consistent grammatical rules
Two factors that are necessary to support normal language learning
- having someone to communicate with
- exposed to language during critical periods in development
Why does no other animal use language the way humans do?
They are unable to master syntax, and cannot generate creative, rule-governed sentences to express meanings, thoughts, and ideas
Different approaches to learning to read
Phonics: teaching the association between letters and the phonemes they represent
whole language instruction: learn to read naturally by learning individual words and stringing them together
Phonics> Whole language instruction
What is Dyslexia
A reading disorder, have trouble reading, spelling, and writing even though they have a normal level of intelligence
