Landscapes created by deposition Flashcards
1
Q
what are the four landscapes created by deposition
A
- beach
- bar
- spit
- sand-dune
2
Q
what is a beach
A
- a large body of sand and small rocks on the coast
- strong swash (constructive waves) throw pebbles and sand far up the beach
- forming a ridge above the high tide mark called a berm
3
Q
how a beach formed
A
- when material created through erosional processes (like abrasion)
- are thrown onto higher ground and is held there in suspension
- transportation and deposition is how the material accumulates
4
Q
what is a bar
A
- a spit (sand or shingle)which has extended out to sea
- and attached to the other side of a headland
5
Q
how is a bar formed
A
- when LSD transports material to the coastline
- constructive waves deposit material at the edge which accumulates to form a spit
- the spit extends out to sea and joins two headlands together
- forming a lagoon behind the bar (circle of water) protected from the sea
6
Q
what is a spit
A
- an elongated narrow ridge of sand or shingle
- joined to the edge of a headland that projects out to sea or estuary
7
Q
how is a pit formed
A
- long shore drift deposits material at the corner of the headland
- the movement to the edge consists of approaching the beach at an angle and backwashing at a perpendicular angle
- moving material along the coast
8
Q
what is a sand dune
A
a tall body of sand
9
Q
how is a sand dune formed
A
- winds blow sand from the coast into land allowing it to accumulate
- accumulated sand becomes stabilised by regalation as species like marram get established
- dunes change in form the further inland, they get smaller the closer to the sea
